I’m really excited about my new book- Search Engine Optimization for Flash. The book shows how to optimize Flash based websites to rank higher in search engine results. As an effort to promote this book, we’re giving away a free copy through this site.

All you have to do to win a copy of the book is make a comment on this post, following these rules:

  • One comment per person, per day
  • Comment must contain a Flash related question that can be answered via a blog post (e.g. How do you create HTML links in Flash?)
  • Comment must be made on this post before 12:00am Pacific Time Wednesday, April 15

The winner will be chosen based on the quality of the Flash question asked (chosen by me- i.e. my favorite question wins), and will receive one copy of Search Engine Optimization for Flash, as well as the answer to the question in the form of a blog post on this site. Have fun!

  1. Hi,

My question is: How can we add text anchors # to flash pages, and give meta descriptions and metatags to each one, in order to improve search engines to revert with most accurate results?

  2. What are the top 3 things you can do to your Flash file for search engine optimization (hey, if I don’t win the book, I’d like to get the answer from somewhere :) ).

  3. I want it!

Good stuff! Keep it up ;-)

  4. Time for the second entry:

How do I insert a video into Flash? As a sub question to that - what is the best format for my movie?

  5. Congrats on your new book! Would love a copy!

  6. ….and my question is: Most Shopping Carts are html based, but how/where could I find an effective Flash based cart for my e-commerce site?

  7. Day #3.

What are some best practices for organizing symbols and other assets in Flash?

  8. Just came across your blog, and my question is this:

With regards to web design, what is progressive enhancement, and how can it be best utilized in order to get my flash animation to the largest audience possible?

  9. Is there a way to ‘tag’ Flash pieces somehow to track with Google Analytics?

Does Flash wear boxers or briefs?

  10. I’m working on a sort of virtual guitar application that will show you whatever chord you select (from a popup menu) on a guitar fretboard, and then play the notes as a strummed chord. My question is how to organize it. Should I make a movie clip of each fret with the letter and sound together, and then make the chord a movie clip as well that will call each of the fret movies associated with that particular chord? Or…should I put everything in the chord movie clip? I think the first idea is the best because I don’t have to duplicate the fret sounds and note letters each time the chord is called. Also, the guitar fretboard image is set as the background, and I’m wondering if that’s a good idea as well because each fret letter has to line up exactly on the fret of that background image, but if the notes/chords are all in their own movie clip, they might tend to get out of alignment with the image since there are over a thousand chords you can play, so I’m wondering if I need to use the fretboard image in each chord movie clip.
    Hope my questions make sense!

  11. Day #4.

How do I use the new bone tool in CS4?

  12. What are the main differences between AS 3.0 and 2.0?

  13. I have an advertisement sent to me as a PDF with multiple images, text, e-mails, URL, etc. Is there a way to separate the images and text and then animate each separately? If so, how?

  14. How can I use SWFObject to help with Flash search engine optimization?

  15. What would you say is the #1 mistake committed by Flash developers?

  16. I have a PDF file with a bunch of small thumbnail-like images that are organized in rows and columns. I would like to separate each of these images into their own layer, or the library to use in different movie clips. Is there a way to do this in Flash? (I was thinking about the break apart function, but not sure how it would work.) I’m currently using CS4.

  17. The motion editor seems aweful complex - How can I use it to tweak my motions without getting a brain cramp?

  18. Hi Todd, I attended your “Creating Games for the Wii” session at Flashbelt last year. Since then, I frequent your blog.

    My question is:

With Google now indexing Flash sites, does Adobe plan to work with smaller search engines to do the same or will they be ignored?

  19. I created a Flash Player stand-alone that loads in 4 swfs that are used only one at a time. Two have similar variables and when the 2nd swf i played, it has variables that are corrupted by the previously loaded swf. Is there a way to flash Flash’s cache of the swfs?

removeMovieclip() does not flush the variables. The only work-around was to do a fscommand(”quit”) and have then rerun the stand-alone.

A third swf had an interval timer and that fires upon rerunning the swf. I have a floating exit button that kicks back to main screen and performs a removeMovieclip(). Apparently it is cached. Again, anyway to flush a swf?

  20. While optimizing my flash site to help it climb in the rankings of google, what are the best “legal” (ie. white hat) SEO practices to help my flash site rankings, and what are some “not so legal” (ie. black hat) practices that designers should stay away from?

  21. How do I put external swf inside swf so that it is fixed size, and if I resizze main swf the loaded swf stays in fixed width and height. Right now I have loaded swf but as soon as I resize main swf it resaizes to to fit the window

  22. How can make it so that when I re-size a swf (in the embed information) the items inside it stay the same size and don’t scale up?

  24. What exactly are the differences in the 3 blend modes? (multiply, screen, and overlay)

  25. Hello. I’d love to participate.

What is the advantage of using the Flex framework instead of the ‘Flash way’ for SEO?
