Here’s where you can ask questions about the book Nintendo Wii Flash Game Creator’s Guide by Todd. We’ll answer the questions here for everyone. You can ask any question by making a comment at the bottom of this post. Look past the break for all the questions and answers.

Q: Where are the exercise files for the book?

A: They’re hidden on the McGraw Hill website, away from the book’s page on that site.

Q: What kind of remote input can the Flash understand when playing Flash content on a Wii?

A: The WiiMote essentially works as a mouse, and the A button as a mouse click. Sadly, you do not have access to the WiiMote’s accelerometer, D-Pad, or other buttons. Further, you can only use the Wii remote when pointed at the screen.

Q: I saw online that people have found ways to access all WiiMote buttons using JavaScript. What’s up with that?

A: Based on research by Mario Klingemann, Wii Flash game site Wiicade.com made an API to access otherWiiMote data. But alas, the API doesn’t work with the final version of the Internet Channel.

Q: Can Flash on a computer understand more complex WiiMote interactivity than Flash on a Wii?

A: Yes! Using tools like Remote Buddy, you can capture loads of button and motion data and use that in a Flash application.

  1. Basically, the gist of it is you create Flash content and publish it to Flash Player 7, then you upload that content and browse to it via the Internet Channel on your Wii. For more information, just look up ActionScript 2.0 or Flash Player 7.

  2. I just found out about this book. And I’m sorry to say your FAQ is completely incorrect. The WiiCade API works just fine with the Wii Remote. It has four player support, buttons, d-pad, some motion control, and other features.

Otherwise how do you think all of WiiCade’s games work? e.g. Jumpman was just released recently:

I wrote a Flash game a while back called Deimos Lander that uses the buttons:

And my most recent effort is a Javascript-based game that uses TWO Wii Remotes. (Count ‘em! ;)):

WiiCade is chock full of more games like these. If you’re having trouble, make sure you are zoomed out to 100% before playing these games. Zooming in will not only obscure parts of the games, but will also prevent special Flash code from running that makes the controls work.

If anyone has trouble with our API (located at labs.wiicade.com) feel free to drop on by the forums and we’ll help you get setup.

Mr. Perkins, my door is always open should you decide to contact me about writing an errata to your book. There’s quite a bit more information you could be sharing with your readers if you are interested.

  3. That’s great news! When preparing the book, I tested the games on your site with my Wii remote, and they worked fine, then after an update of the Internet Channel to the final version the same games no longer worked. I figured it’s something Nintendo did. I’ll check out your site on my Wii, and see how everything works. Thanks!

  4. Enjoyed your post. Thanks!

  5. Finding this blog for chance:)
I’m learning your work “ActionScript.3.0.in.Flash.CS4.Professional.for.Designers” these days.It is really helpful. Looking forward to your other works related to AS3 in Flash CS4.

  6. does it come with a cd

  7. Hey, I just acquired your book. Let me say it is really good and very instructive. But I can’t access the files on McGraw-Hill website. They always show the We’re sorry page and some other stuff, but ulitmately, I’m stuck without those files. Is it possible for you to send me the files or better, post it on this website? That would save me a lot of trouble. Thanks.

  8. The book doesn’t have a CD. It comes with example files you can download from here- http://tinyurl.com/b8d9wj.

Glen- sorry about the confusion. I think they redid the site right after my book was published, so the download info in the book is inaccurate.

  9. What do you mean by Chapter 3 exercise files folder on Page 102 of the book?

  10. If you download the files from the link in this article, you should see a set of files that goes with Chapter 3.

  11. Can games be created with Flash MX Professional 2004 Version 7?
When I try to load the examples it says ” Unexpected File Format”

  12. Yes, you just need to create it using Flash Player 7, and make sure you’re browsing to the HTML file on your Wii, not the SWF file.

  13. @Jack you’re trying to open the exercise files for the book in Flash 2004? Unfortunately, that won’t work. I created them in Flash CS3, and the earliest version you can save is Flash 8. The code will be exactly the same though.

  14. Thanks Todd I will give it a try! Great Book!

  15. Ty for the book it’s very good but i have problem downloading the files from synggres.com.Can somebody help me?
    thnx in advance
